Sudan
A human rights catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan. In 2023, a power struggle between military factions erupted into civil war, and violent conflict has raged ever since. Innocent men, women, and children are caught in the crossfire. More than 11 million of Sudan’s 50 million people have been internally displaced or fled abroad.
Advocating for Justice
While Sudan is currently experiencing the largest displacement crisis on the planet, its brutal civil war remains little known to many. Targeted ethnic violence in Darfur and elsewhere has raised the specter of another genocide such as that of the early 2000s.
PEJ has worked in Sudan since 2016. When the current armed conflict erupted in 2023, PEJ did not abandon its efforts. Our experts continue to rigorously document Sudan’s war crimes and atrocities. We also support a network of more than 20 human rights-defending organizations that operate both within the country and in exile.
Local partners are dedicated to helping Sudan rebuild and become a peaceful, stable society – and they deserve our help. PEJ is empowering them to document evidence, safely store it, and use it to hold perpetrators accountable. In this way, we work to empower the Sudanese people to create strong, credible, and responsive post-conflict institutions that will protect the fundamental human rights of all people.
The work will require perseverance and dedication – but the path of justice is one we are compelled to pursue. Sensitivity, experience, and sound judgment will be paramount to navigating postwar challenges. The people of Sudan deserve this support. At PEJ, we are committed to providing it, both now and in the future.
